LEWISTON - The Priest River Lamanna High School wrestling team finished ninth at the Clearwater Classic here Jan. 19-20.
PRLHS wrestling head coach Jesse Hellinger singled out the performance of Brandon Downs, who “wrestled as good as anyone” during the competition and avenged a loss from earlier in the year with a pin in his first match.
Then in his second match Hellinger said Downs had Shane Lund, a 52-win wrestler from Enterprise H.S. in Oregon, stuck for four seconds but got a no-call. Lund eventually beat Downs 15-10. “I was heated on that,” said Hellinger. “I understand a 52-win kid gets respect but Brandon is a two-time state placer and gets a call when it’s so blatant!” Downs went on to win his next two matches by fall and earned third place. The coach added, “Downs is on a roll since returning to the lineup!”
After winning his first three matches of the tournament, Riley DeMent lost the 138 lb. championship match to Tanner Hutchens of Lewiston H.S. in a 4-3 decision. Arron Reyes made it to the 220 lb. championship match but lost a 22-11 decision to Atsamaz Pliev of Southridge H.S.
Manuel Naccarato and Truxton Wilson earned fifth place in their weight classes, respectively. Graden Hanes, Devin Nessel, and Larry Naccarato wrestled hard in their brackets, the coach added.
