PRIEST RIVER — Following a slow start, the Lady Spartans lost to Bonners Ferry 53-25 Jan. 27. The team fell behind 23-5 in the first quarter. Priest River kept pace in the second quarter but again gave up ground in the third quarter by scoring four points compared to Bonners Ferry’s 14. The fourth quarter was a low-scoring affair in which Bonners Ferry held Priest River to seven points and prevented a rally. Karah Fink led Spartan scorers with eight points, and added five rebounds and two steals to her contributions for the night. Jasmine Martin and Shayla Martinez scored five points each. The team notched four steals and 10 rebounds total.

Head coach Christina Leonard said, “Bonners is a tough offensive and defensive team and we focused on limiting their shots. We were able to bring down their score by one-third from our previous match up with them. We were also able to bring up our scoring from the previous match up.

Two days later, the Spartans lost at Deer Park 64-34. Fink again led the Spartans by contributing 14 points, with Martinez adding nine and Adrie Minish scoring six. The Spartans hung around in the first quarter but fell behind 32-14 by halftime and then fell behind by eight more points in the third quarter. Despite the losses, Leonard opined that the players are improving. “The girls are playing better and better with each game,” the coach said.
