DEER PARK — The Stags jumped all over the Spartans here Jan. 29 in a 55-37 Priest River loss. The home team raced out to a 24-5 lead that they never relinquished despite Priest River’s best efforts.

Head coach Kevin Wylie said, “We did not come ready to play in the first quarter. I’m not sure the cause of it but we looked very tired, and not enthusiastic to play. Being outscored 24-5 in the first quarter cost us this game. Although we didn’t play well in the second quarter we only allowed 11 points, and put up seven. Out of the half we showed more intensity and played aggressive. We won the second half by five points.”

Keegan Hegel led Priest River with 17 points, while Dylan Johnson added nine and Ronnie Downs scored seven.

Two days earlier, the Spartans fell to Bonners Ferry 54-38 in a contest that the Spartans never quit. Wylie said, “Once again we struggled to find the bottom of the basket in the third quarter only scoring four points. Early in the season we were giving up too many points and struggling to score. Now that we are holding our opponents to mid-50s we need to find more ways to score. We are not consistent enough to win games.”

Hegel led with 15 points, Caden Brennan scored 10 points and Dausen O’Brien contributed nine points.
